Box Culvert Bridge, how to Construct it?

Box Culvert, descriptions

Streams, drainages and overflow ditches that cross drives and accesses must be dealt with by means of culverts, drive over concrete slabs, bridges or the like. The one outlined in this article was made to replace circular cross part culverts that were continually causing problems. The drainage that crosses this drive was initially addressed by placing a concrete slab at the place where the water came across the gravel drive. This was ultimately replaced with tandem around culverts that were collapsed by heavily loaded vehicles after a time. The final solution was to build a stilted box culvert / bridge structure that was constructed at the home shop site and then transported and installed at the drain crossing. This is a practical and long lasting solution to providing a means of draining water across a drive, small road or other access.

Step to Construct a Box Culvert Bridge Excavation can be done manually, but a backhoe is far simpler and quicker

Excavate for your bridge assembly by using a backhoe, Finishing up work can be done with shovels. If the underside of the excavation is soft and muddy then you may need to excavate six inches deeper that required and then add crushed rock or gravel to get a excellent base. It all depends on what type of traffic you are anticipating. For normal residential drives, primarily rural or housing, extra heavy duty construction should not be required. The bridge that was the basis for this article has carried tractors, LP gas trucks, lumber trucks and all types of normal vehicles. This bridge has been in service for fifteen years or more. Make the two side panel assemblies

Start by constructing one of the side panel assemblies. Choose how many 5 x 5 timbers you will need on each stack by measuring from the top of the drive surface to the underside of where the drainage will be. Cut (6) PT 2 x 4′s the same length as the stack height and make two panel assemblies as shown in the drawing. Keep the ends of the timbers – which all should be the same length – square. These assemblies can be built on a flat trailer so that it can be used to haul your bridge assembly to the site when it is completed. Assembly of the top and underside framing to the side panel assemblies

Standing the side assemblies on edge add the top 5 x 5 timber cross members (six pieces cut to 3ft.
