Trading a fantasy for a Toyota Corolla | Philadelphia Inquirer | 2011-08-29

By Charles Sayda

Fantasies die hard. I know because my wife and I recently had to part with our imagination: a deep blue Saab convertible as we drove for eight years.

It was barely a month now that I've been driving a new, eminently serviceable gray Toyota Corolla. But all I can see on the road is convertible, most of them with their tops down. Audi, Mini Cooper, Mercedes-Benz, the Mustangs, Sebring, Volvo, Solara, PT Cruiser, Convertibles, Vettes, jeeps, spiders, Mazda and Saab siblings - all convertibles.

I feel like Don Birnam, an alcoholic played by Ray Milland in Lost Weekend

We bought the Saab one afternoon after my wife called me at work and said: "We will look at convertibles." It was an unusual game of pure self-indulgence: The only purpose of a convertible would fulfill the dreams of inactivity.

I gave no argument.

Initially, the fantasy was less a vehicle than it was supposed to do: convey us and our two English setters on a camping adventure in the cross-country classic American style - from top to bottom, the hair (and ears) flying in the breeze.

It was not long before the car and fantasy become one. The Saab had an off-white leather interior, front seats have electronic controls and heating position, a dash simulated-wood, a five-speed stick and a 2-liter turbo engine that has transformed into a fourth gear power. It handled like a motorcycle. No worries to get on a crowded highway in this baby.

Most important, it is my wife, a blonde good looks, a dress designer. It belonged to this type of car. For me it was like a tuxedo or a suit custom-No man could fail to look good in such a vehicle.

You might say reality killed the fantasy - two of them. The first blow came early, when we discovered that the trunks of modern convertibles are essentially glorified glove compartments. We examined a Sebring and a BMW before settling on the Saab. Until then, we had pretty well dropped the fantasy of a journey through the country with the dogs, at least if we wanted to bring something more than toiletries and change of underwear. The trunk can accommodate a little more food for animals, bowls and beds.
