Fly Tying Vice, the Most Important ToolThe vice is the most important piece of fly tying equipment. There are many different types of vices, ranging in style and price, but investing in a nice, rotary vice (which allows a tyer to turn the hook, to tie material onto the sides or bottom of the hook, to dry epoxy evenly, or simply to access other angles) can be worth it from the start. Basic, mid-range rotary vices, such as Peak vices, available at Cabela's are sufficient for beginners, but for a high quality investment, Renzetti vices often turn out to be the best in the long run.
Fly Tying Tools for BeginnersThe bobbin, a device which the tyer holds, which itself holds the spool of thread being used is absolutely necessary. A bobbin threader can also be helpful, as it makes it easy to feed the thread through the bobbin's tube when switching spools. For knots, a whip finisher and a half hitcher can each be very handy. Fly tying scissors, which are smaller and sharper than standard cutters, allowing for more precision, are also highly recommended. The bodkin tool, a pointed metal device can help a tyer apply cement or glue or clear the eye of a hook. Also helpful are vice fly tying stations, which have places for tool storage and for spools, and mounts for vices. Tweezers, hackle pliers, and vice or hat lights can come in handy as well.
Beginner Fly Tying Materials (for Fly Patterns)The vice, and all of the tools above make creating patterns easy, but they are useless without the right materials. To begin, a tyer must have hooks, thread, and tying materials. Here are some actual materials which can help amateurs create or replicate basic patterns:
6/0 pre-waxed thread (brown, gray, olive, black) Freshwater nymph hooks (size 10-14) Freshwater dry fly hooks (size 12-16) Hackle (different sizes, in grizzly, black, brown) Elk hair (tan) Lead eyes to fit larger nymph hooks Bead heads to fit nymph hooks Dubbing fur (brown, gray, olive, tan, black) Crystal flash (pearl) Chenille (brown, gray, olive, black) Marabou (brown, olive, black) Wood duck feathers Bucktail (white, tan) Fly head cement.Experimenting with the above materials, which can be used to create basic wet flies, such as woolly buggers, basic streamers, such as Clouser minnows and muddler minnows , and fundamental dries, such as elk hair caddis flies and Adams dry flies , is best for beginners. There are countless popular and productive patterns you can do with only these fly tying materials. The use of the right tools, materials, and a quality vice will have any beginner tyer replicating and creating great patterns in no time.
