Daniel Paul Muggee has spent most of his summer volunteering at the Christian Cupboard food shelf, the Dorothy Day Center and preparing to attend the University of Iowa this fall. Despite an intense search, the Woodbury teen — like many of his peers — was not able to find a job.
The national 9.1-percent unemployment rate impacts working people of all ages. This summer recent high school graduates from Woodbury are sharing in the struggle that comes with it.
“I knew the economy had not regained (its strength), but I thought it would be relatively easy,” Muggee, 18, said in regard to applying for jobs.
Muggee applied for six jobs, but could not find one this summer. He began his search in early May and felt that he was “in the middle” in terms of application timing but soon discovered he was too late.
“I went by stores and asked for job openings. If they said yes I would go home and apply on the Internet. I thought a quick application would work,” Muggee said.
He would wait for a call-back to see if he had at least gotten an interview, but none ever came.
“I wanted a job to get an income for myself to hang out with my friends and get used to the demands of working,” he said.
Muggee is part of a growing trend among peers in his age group.
According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the unemployment rate for Minnesotans aged 16 to 19 increased from 13.7 percent to 21.1 percent between 2008 and 2010. A 2010 DEED report also stated teens are facing more competition when applying for relatively low-skill, low-wage positions with displaced workers and recent college graduates.
Muggee is one of the 5.5 percent of Woodbury citizens currently unemployed. More of his friends are unemployed than employed, he said.
One of those friends is David Nemetz, who volunteers at Twins games for Delaware North Co. in a program that repays his hours of service with grant money for college.
Because the money goes straight to grants, Nemetz, 18, does not consider it an actual job. He originally wanted to work in service-related positions but had no luck.

One strategy he had used to find jobs was asking his friends to put in a good word for him to managers. However, those recommendations didn't lead to call backs or interviews. “It was hard because I had not had previously been employed and was hoping
