Diane von Furstenberg designer finds inspiration in the savage, eccentric

The Metropolitan Museum of Art bid farewell to the eighth most famous exhibition held, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty”. McQueen (1969-2010) was one of the most influential, groundbreaking fashion designers of his time, infamous for his impeccable tailoring and romantically sinister couture. Throughout the exhibit, quotes by McQueen were displayed describing his frame of thought about his fashion and life. One in particular resonated with a reassured positive notion that not all of McQueen was dark:

“It is important to look at death because it is a part of life. It is a sad thing, melancholic but romantic at the same time. It is the end of a cycle - everything has to end. The cycle of life is positive because it gives room for new things.”

Indeed, life will go on and a new generation of young designers will strive to leave their mark on fashion the way McQueen did. Daniel Nieto, footwear designer at Diane von Furstenberg, is one of those aspiring achievers. Nieto, a graduate from Fashion Institute of Technology in 2010, resides in the East Village of Manhattan. Eleven years ago, Nieto migrated from his home country of Colombia to Miami, and then to New York to pursue design.

“I always had a passion for fashion,” says the young designer, who describes himself as outgoing, eccentric, and loud, but understands boundaries and how to respect people. “As a kid, I would make accessories for fun. I would craft things out of thread and scraps of other accessories, such as a piece of earring or chain; but I never thought I would become a designer.”

It was 2007 when Nieto realized he could make a career out of creating accessories. Already enrolled at FIT studying fashion merchandising, a friend from Mexico invited him down to Argentina so they could design together. There he began using raw leather and feathers to create savage style pieces, and the seed was planted for his next steps. Upon returning to New York, Nieto transferred to the accessory design program at FIT, won the Excellence in Footwear Design, Next Generation Award in 2010, and joined the DVF team upon graduation.

Informally dubbed the second coming of Alexander McQueen for his innovative, architectural, avant-garde style, Nieto feels it is an immense honor to be compared to the late designer. “I love McQueen. He is a great inspiration for me. My whole plan while I was in school was to move to London after graduation and work for him. When he died, I did my thesis in honor of him.
