'THIS YEAR HAS BEEN EXTREMELY GOOD; CATTLE PRICES ARE VERY STRONG'

The association is also very fortunate to house the Kentucky Beef Council’s beef check-off program and the Kentucky Beef Network in its offices. The Kentucky Beef check-off (a marketing and promotion program) receives a $1 investment for every bovine animal sold in the state of Kentucky. Fifty cents of each dollar stays in the state and is used to advertise and promote beef and beef products. The Beef Network is funded with grants from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund to help transition tobacco-dependent farmers into cattle producers. The beef cow is the factory, the “momma” cow. The larger the herd of cows, the more beef a state can produce. Kentucky falls in behind Texas, Oklahoma and several of the Midwestern states in herd size and is always in contention with Tennessee to have the largest herd east of the Mississippi. Over the last decade, Kentucky has managed to stay one notch ahead of Tennessee; Florida usually is ranked not far behind Kentucky and Tennessee. The stocker operator gets the calves vaccinated, castrated and bunk broke (accustomed to eating dry, processed feeds prior to the stresses of weaning). It’s similar to a child going into kindergarten (e.g., children interact together and build immunity to upper respiratory illnesses). This step gets calves prepared to go to the next stage: the feedlot. On resale by the stocker operator, these calves either go back through the auction system or an Internet sale. Most of the cattle sold in Kentucky are going to go to a feedlot in another state. DM: ? Nationally, the cow herd has been down 12 out of the last 15 years. So you’ve got fewer cattle in the market. Feed and operating costs have gone up. Corn, soybeans, soybean meal, fertilizer and fuel are all increasing. Another factor is many cattle producers are older. It’s probably easier for them to cash-in (sell off their cattle) and then manage a smaller herd. DM :? Livestock and livestock products generate revenues that amount to 60 percent of Kentucky’s agricultural economy. Thoroughbred horses and cattle are Kentucky’s most important livestocks, according to state agricultural data. The poultry industry has grown substantially in recent years, but it doesn’t have that many farmers involved. The cattle industry is statewide, and there are 38,000 beef cattle farmers. DM: ?

Kentucky Will Build an Ark, Sail Away From America's Problems

So 900 people will build the ark (which is cheating, because didn't Noah build the real ark all by himself?) and then sail away to nowhere, because Kentucky is landlocked, but oh well, there are no maps at the Creation Museum. [Lexington Herald-Leader]
