Cardinal Law celebrates snowy Mass marking dedication of St. Mary Major

ROME (CNS) -- White flower petals fell from the ceiling of Rome's Basilica of St. Mary Major as Romans and pilgrims joined Cardinal Bernard F. Law, archpriest of the basilica, for Mass marking the church's dedication.

According to tradition, on Aug. 5, 358, Mary caused snow to fall on the spot, indicating where she wanted a church built in her honor. The event is marked each Aug. 5 with flower-petal precipitation during the singing of the Gloria at Mass and with an evening lightshow outside the basilica featuring artificial snow spewing from cannons.

During his homily, Cardinal Law said the basilica celebrates Mary as the true mother of God. "Mary is the providential instrument chosen by God to make himself visible to our eyes, our minds and our hearts."

The cardinal offered special prayers for Pope Benedict XVI in the year marking the 60th anniversary of his priestly ordination and for Christians in Egypt and in other parts of the world who suffer for their faith.

He ended his homily by praying that the Basilica of St. Mary would be "a place of communion with God the father, son and Holy Spirit; a place of authentic Marian devotion drawing people ever closer to her divine son; and a place of true conversion, healing, holiness and peace."

As in 2010, three U.S.-based groups who represent victims of clerical sex abuse had issued statements Aug. 4 asking Pope Benedict to bar Cardinal Law from celebrating such a publicly prominent Mass.

Cardinal Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in 2002 amid criticism of his handling of clergy sex abuse cases; Pope John Paul II named him archpriest of St. Mary Major in 2004.

Weddings are romantic celebrations. They bring together all your family and friends to celebrate your commitment to one another. But even tough they are fun to attend they can sometimes be quite challenging to organize.

The bride must pay attention to each little detail. Usually when you think of wedding you instantly think of flowers. It’s the first think that pop ion everyone’s minds. Maybe because flowers represent beauty and romance and that’s what a wedding is all about.

Some brides want very extravagant looking flower arrangements while others rather keep it simple. This however depends on your wedding budget. Of course each bride would like only the best for her special day but not everyone can afford to spend huge sums of money on flowers. And if you come to think of it, they will languish in a few days. So what’s the point really? But a really good and cheaper alternative would be artificial flowers . They are cheaper and they last. If you are getting married in fall, given the fact that some flowers are hard to find and when you do find them they are really pricy, a good alternative would be to buy artificial fall flowers. You could use roses, lilies, chrysanthemums etc. Make sure to coordinate the flowers with the colors of the season. You could use oranges, dark red, gold and you could mix them up. Keep in mind that artificial flowers are made out of silk and some out of plastic.

 Know your fabrics before you pick the appropriate wedding flowers. Given the fact that it is a romantic celebration you should use softer materials and more elegant ones such as silk. You can buy these flowers at various shops or crafting stores. It would be advisable to buy some faux fall leaves and some branches along with the flowers. This way you could make the flower arrangements even more beautiful and “real” looking. This would be a very different approach. You don’t have to go with the traditional flower arrangements. You could have beautiful artificial flowers just as the real ones and the money you save on flowers you can use them on something else. Don’t be afraid to try something different.
