Friends Remember Fallen Rap Artist
Mason City Police say 27-year-old Brandon Tony James Crawford was shot near the Casey's General Store on North Federal Tuesday around 5 p.m. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa and later pronounced dead.Police have three people in custody: 31-year-old Jamaal Joshua Leslie is charged with first degree murder. In addition, 24-year-old Winsdell Nowelin Lamb and 46-year-old Donya Marie Lee are both accused of withholding information related to the investigation. All are from Mason City.
Those close to the victim say it will take a while to recover from this deadly act of violence.
“Ridiculous man, it's just ridiculous,” said a rap musician who goes by the name ‘So Serious.’ He got to know Brandon Crawford through their shared interest in performing.
“He was a good friend to me you know and it's just sad to see somebody that has potential or had potential to do something great,” said Serious.
The two guys would usually rap in the same shows around the north Iowa area.
“I mean when they hit the stage man the crowd felt them and that's what you want the feedback from the crowd and that's what gives you the motivation to keeping moving forward with it,” said Serious.
Those close to Crawford say he moved to Mason City about ten years ago from Detroit, trying to get away from this kind of violence.
“I know he has a lot of friends and a lot of people that have accumulated over the years that are hurt by this situation,” said Serious.
And after Tuesday’s shooting people hope more of the same doesn't follow.
“It's like they're not even proving a point with any of it, just senseless ignorance and stupidity mixed in a bowl,” said Serious.
Trying to remember a fallen friend, while protecting those still here.
“Who's the hardest? Who's the baddest? Who's the toughest? You'll find out but you'll be gone or you'll be in prison and we lost a very, very good soldier man. Rest in peace bro,” said Serious.
A memorial rap concert for Crawford and his family was being planned for Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Mason City, however due to concerns about violence, they have decided to cancel it. As far as the acts leading up to yesterday's shooting, Mason City Police are not commenting on a reason at this time. Police had the Casey's surrounded Tuesday all through the night. They're asking anyone with information to give them a call.
