Madness comes to Three Sisters
Whenever a new band is created with members of a previously successful band, there is the inevitable tsk-tsk of the critics. There are comparisons, there is fan outcry, there's the general mayhem of people coming to terms with change. Especially when said band is Alter Bridge, put together in 2004 in Orlando, Fla., and largely made up of members of Creed, minus singer Scott Stapp.
The group will play Carnival of Madness Aug. 14 at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, along with Theory of a Deadman, Black Stone Cherry, Adelita's Way and Emphatic. The event starts at 6 p.m., and tickets are $25.
Creed, for anyone who might not have turned on a radio in the 1990s, released four consecutive multi-platinum albums that included songs such as "With Arms Wide Open," "My Sacrifice," "My Own Prison," "Torn" "What's This Life For" and "One." Creed sold an estimated 35 million albums, and vocalist Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti earned themselves a reputation as a prolific songwriting team. But tensions grew, Stapp went his own way, and when the dust settled, there was Alter Bridge, made up of Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips, bassist Brian Marshall and new singer Miles Kennedy.
Tremonti says he took a lot of heat at first.
"After the first album, people called us 'Creed part 2,'" Tremonti said by telephone from his home in Orlando. "I think we were playing it safe a little bit. But with our second record, we got tired of that, and we really pushed to reinvent ourselves and produce a new sound. We broke the mold, and that's when the critics turned around and everything fell into place for us."
Alter Bridge, which is named after a bridge near Tremonti's former home in Detroit, is currently touring on its third album, "ABIII." When it was released in December, the album debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard 200. Critics have called it the moodiest, darkest album yet. Tremonti agrees with that, but says the darkness is more lyrical than instrumental.
"This record is just a little darker and more sinister, because of the subject matter. This album is a lot about a person who lost faith in believing in God or anything, who feels left alone," Tremonti said.
Now that Alter Bridge is on its third album, the band has had time to forge an identity. Tremonti said going back to the "simple" style of touring was a big change.

I guess the dude from Creed is probably the target market for a new Van Halen album, but still: That the guy who played the axe on "Arms Wide Open" is afforded opportunities to hear new Van Halen tracks before anyone else should make you boil.
Puffing on his pipe, Giri conjured visions of ancient faultlines of caste and creed, of clan and tribe, wanting to open wide their cataclysmic jaws and swallow up in a trice the marvels of modern India…. Towards the end of every edit meeting,
We welcome Muslim migrants from Central Asia in all our community centers with open arms. We teach them, we show them how we live and share the traditions of our ancestors with them. As Mr Gainutdin mentioned, the television plays a great role here.
Music Monday: “Arms Wide Open” by Creed | The DaddyYo Blog
As much as I hate to admit it, there is a Creed song that I still like. Maybe it is because I am a dad now. Who knows? Normally I would disavow any knowledge of such a band these days. I hadn’t though about this song in quite a while until a tweet from my mom earlier this week. The tweet read “@TheDaddyYoDude Listening to “Arms Wide Open” made me think about you ”. I know, my mom is the best.
When I went on break at work that day I had this song stuck in my head. So I looked up the lyrics just for nostalgia’s sake.
Well I don’t know if I’m ready, to be the man I have to be. I’ll take a breath. I’ll take her by my side. We stand in awe, we’ve created life.
With arms wide open. Under the sunlight. Welcome to this place, I’ll show you everything. With arms wide open. Now everything has changed I’ll show you love I’ll show you everything, with arms wide open.
Dads, there is not a single on among us who can say they didn’t feel the same way when they first heard the news. It was miraculously life changing when the first news of becoming a dad reached my eyes. That little, cheap plastic test, changed my entire world.
I was happy, joyous, scared, and troubled all at the same time. I wasn’t sure if I was ready or not. Now I KNOW I wasn’t ready. But truth be told, I will never be ready for what is next and I will always be worried that I am not ready to be who I need to be for my children.
We welcomed both of our children into this world with showers of kisses in an air of love. They were welcomed into out lives with our arms wide open and ready to be received. It didn’t matter, at those moments, if we were ready or not. The moments came and those moments made our worlds, and made our lives complete.
Well Scott Stapp, you managed to say something that still resonates in my mind long after your drunk concerts, arrests, and removal from fame by self-inflicted shame. If you have ever talked to me about my biggest fear as a dad, or read any of my posts about it, then you know why the above lyrics are so close to me. My biggest, number one, top of the list, below none fear of being a dad is that my children will turn out just like me.
I fear my children taking the same paths I have, making the same bad choices I have in life, and not being able to see everything that life really has to offer them. I especially worry about this with my Little Man. I don’t want to see my son grow up to be stuck in jobs like me, to fight addiction like me, and to never be able to seek out his true calling like me. There is so much that life has to offer that I do not want my children to miss out on. On this, I hope, I wish, and I pray, that they understand that they can greet this world with a smile.
