In today’s housing market, a house is like a Hyundai – something home owners can buy and sell in just a few short years. Unlike a Hyundai (or any car, really), home owners might even make a profit on their investment. Those days are gone.
Today’s home buyers are more cautious and think more about long-term ownership. According to Naples, Florida real estate guru Tim Ryan, “This trend will cause buyers to become more picky and thoughtful about the homes they purchase. If you’re a seller, you’ll need to do more than ever to get your home sold.”
What all of this means is that buyers are shopping for homes , not houses. They’re looking for something that provides shelter and security for their family, not just a property or a “fixer upper” they can flip in a few years. That’s good news for modular home builders, because it means home buyers are more likely to build a new home (like the Excel Homes Winchester model above, which is part of our American Lifestyle series) than to buy an existing house with the intention of moving on in a few years.
First time home buyers in 2011 will probably stay in their homes for 10 or 15 years before they consider selling it. That’s still a far cry from the 40 or 50 years of ownership our parents enjoyed, but it’s definitely a step in right direction.
