Christian counseling center helps those in need

When Christians find themselves burdened with issues of the world, they have a help alternative that relies on powers beyond the world.

The Dayspring Center for Christian Counseling in Albertville provides a faith-based approach to counseling in all areas of life, including marriage and pre-marriage, adolescent, divorce recovery, addiction, family, group, adjustment disorder and mood disorder.

“I think Christians have the same problems as the rest of the world,” Director Terry Nelson said. “We’re all living on the same earth, so we struggle with the same things.”

However, he said some Christians don’t always believe that statement.

“Unfortunately, some Christians think they shouldn’t have problems,” he said. “They feel guilty when they get here.”

When these feelings arise, Nelson said it is important to remember that even the most God-fearing biblical characters struggled with the same issues. For example, David, who reigned as king over Israel for many years, became “obviously depressed” sometimes and “struggled with family relationships,” according to Nelson.  In the book of 1 Kings, the prophet Elijah even prayed for God to kill him in the desert.

“I use some of those examples to let them know that they’re in good company,” Nelson said. “Sometimes it’s a real eye-opener.”

While today’s secular counseling relies on the knowledge and skill sets acquired through worldly training and experience to create change in a person’s life, he said the licensed Christian counselors at Dayspring utilize the same tools, but they rely on a different tool to make real change — the Holy Spirit.

“Our belief is that you don’t get a permanent change without a spiritual change,” Nelson said. “Research shows that counseling of any type is usually equally effective, except for Christians. I believe that if you have a faith and belief in a God that can help to heal you, that goes a long way in recovery.”

While churches in the area help the organization by providing donations or referrals, the relationship is mutually beneficial.

“Our goal here, other than to glorify God, is to provide a Christian alternative to counseling and be a resource for local pastors,” Nelson said. “We know pastors can get overwhelmed with people needing help.”

But they don’t limit services to only Christians. He said they often get patient referrals, many of which are non-Christians, from doctors. When new patients come to the center, they fill out forms and are asked if they would like to pray. If the patient refuses prayer, the counselors ask why.
