John Hiatt - "Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns": John Hiatt's music has become as comfortable as an old pair of jeans, and like those work pants, he's still right for the job. Hiatt just writes up a bunch of guitar-driven rock songs with a country-blues edge, and sings and picks his way through while making observations on the state of life in America today. - Steve Horowitz
Fruit Bats - "Tripper": There's a darkness hovering around these songs, and if they still ride on the bright tone of Eric Johnson's voice, they are unafraid to let clouds cover that shine from time to time. At its base, it continues the dusty AM-gold vibe the other records achieved, but Johnson - who has of late begun to work on film scores - pushes himself to incorporate new layers on the record. - Matthew Fiander
Keb Mo' - "The Reflection": Times have changed, and Keb Mo' has changed with them, shedding his down-home blues-folk leanings in favor of the slicker soul stylings of recent records such as 2004's "Keep It Simple" and 2011's "The Door." His latest album is a continuation in that vein. The acoustic guitar is scarcely to be heard in this collection, and the blues are a faint influence. Lush arrangements and soulful crooning are the order of the day. - David Maine
Arcade Fire - "The Suburbs Deluxe Edition": The original version of "The Suburbs" seems to be complete enough that it doesn't need any tinkering, even if it's hard to begrudge the Montreal art-rock collective for taking a well-deserved victory lap. Appending two unreleased songs, an expanded version of an earlier track, and a short film by Spike Jonze based on the album, "The Suburbs Deluxe Edition" ends up being a case of subtraction by addition, when providing more material and new context takes a little bit away from what was already a winning formula. - Arnold Pan
