STAWAR: Too good to last
In 1921 Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan’s creator, wrote a novel entitled “The Efficiency Expert,” which is a fictionalized account of his misadventures finding a job before becoming a writer. Although Burroughs’ protagonist was a likable young man, the stereotype of the efficiency expert has taken on a negative cast as someone who values profit over people. In the 1992 film version of “The Efficiency Expert,” Anthony Hopkins plays the title role as a man who eventually has to face the people he hurts in his quest for profits. Even Santa Claus has not been spared. In the 2007 movie “Fred Claus,” Kevin Spacey plays Clyde Northcutt, a ruthless efficiency expert, sent to close down Santa’s inefficient operation. In the climactic scene, the evil Clyde tells the elves: “You’re all fired. In the morning you’ll all be on a bus back to Elfistan.” A few years ago, Bruce Horovitz, a marketing reporter for USA Today, described how many other companies have downsized their products to maintain the same profit margins in light of increasing costs. In the last decade, ice cream makers downsized their standard container size from the traditional half-gallon to 1.5 quarts. According to the Nielsen Co., up to 30 percent of packaged goods have decreased some of their content. In 2008, Frito-Lay reduced number of chips in bags across their product line and a jar of Hellmann’s mayonnaise that was once 32 ounces is now 30. Breakfast cereals, cookies, soft drinks, yogurt, soap, paper towels and even toilet paper have all shrunk. Strategically, such downsizing is done in increments that are very difficult for the average consumer to notice. As the story goes, over time the company continues to reduce the number of olives until they reach the point where they go out of business because their competitors are offering many more olives at the same price. At times it really seems like companies are just looking to see how far they can push until consumers have had a bellyful and switch products. Even worse than surreptitiously decreasing product size is changing the product’s composition. In recent years, most of the major candy companies eliminated expensive cocoa butter from their chocolate candies and replaced them with vegetable oil, which many claim is a health hazard.
