Verizon strike not happening in Tampa
As thousands of Verizon landline strikers took to picket lines this week from Massachusetts to Virginia, local operations have not been affected by the work stoppage.
In Florida, Verizon's roughly 3,300 employees under the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union work under a different contract than their Northern counterparts. That contract has a different expiration date than Northern unions, and the Florida union generally has not held sympathy strikes along with unions from other regions.
So operations in the Tampa Bay area have not been affected by strikes up North, said spokesman Bob Elek.
Verizon in Florida did train thousands of managers and supervisors to help keep Verizon operations going in Northern states as the strike unfolds.
Visa to push for phone payments at checkout
Visa Inc. revealed plans to encourage U.S. retailers to shift to checkout systems that let consumers pay by tapping their mobile phones, as the biggest payment network aims to jump ahead of rivals and curb credit card fraud.
The company said it will let merchants that switch to credit card readers supporting so-called EMV technology forgo costly annual security certifications. Starting in 2015, it will also stop requiring banks to reimburse most merchants for some types of credit card fraud, which can be prevented by using EMV systems, Visa said in a statement.
GM to halve number of frames to cut costs
General Motors plans to be leaner in the future by cutting in half the number of car and truck frames its uses worldwide.
In slide presentations for its annual global business conference for industry analysts, GM said it built cars and trucks on 30 frames last year. That number would be cut to 14 by 2018, saving on engineering, design and manufacturing costs. The company also plans to keep its investment in research and development consistent, even when car sales are down. That will save money by ending the practice of stopping and starting projects.
Newsstand magazine sales down 9 percent
A new report says sales of U.S. magazines at newsstands and other retail outlets fell 9 percent in the first six months of the year in a sign of readers trimming discretionary spending.
Although overall circulation was down just 1 percent, the larger drop in the single-copy sales figure is troubling for magazine publishers. That's because publishers typically make more from those sales than from subscriptions, which are sold at a discount so publishers can boost circulation and lure advertisers.
