Paul Simon’s lyrics from “Bridge over Troubled Water” begin to summarize to work of the new Pasadena shelter of the same name.
“The Bridge” helps women, children and men in crisis related to domestic violence, sexual assault or homelessness.
When you're down and out, When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard, I will comfort you
Located at the corner of Allen-Genoa and Fairmont Parkway, new The Bridge comforts people from Pasadena, South Houston, La Porte, Jacinto City, Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park and the southeast portion of Houston.
Last year they helped about 20,000 people. Half were children. Almost all have low or no income.
“If you are a victim of any type of abuse—physical, mental, emotional—if you have been sexually assaulted, if you are homeless, then we have services for you. We also have rental and utility assistance services,” said Kim Kankel, a Development Specialist at The Bridge.
The Grand Opening ribbon was cut at the new location on Thursday (August 4).
It has 25 more beds than the old location. The dorm rooms have more bathrooms, the child care facility is larger and they’ve added a toddler room and after-school room.
Surrounding it all is security gates and cameras.
With the security comes more services.
“We are able to offer very unconventional hours for group counseling and sessions. We can do training on weekends that we weren’t able to do. We have our own parking and our own security. It makes it easier for us to offer those services that we weren’t able to offer before,” Kankel said.
Thursday morning, The Bridge Executive Director Debbie Moseley unveiled the wall of the entrance area of the new building, revealing a dedication to Calvin and Patricia Powitzky. Calvin is the Senior Principal of Bay Architects and played a key role in making the building a reality.
“This is a wonderful facility and it shows what can happen when people work together,” said Pasadena Mayor Johnny Isbell at the opening ceremony.
The Bridge started 33 years ago with six families. Now and for years to come, it operates 24 hours a day for those in troubled water.
