New center offers greater recreational opportunities for seniors

Beginning Monday Flower Mound Seniors in Motion began to enjoy stepped-up activity moving into spacious new quarters near the Flower Mound Town Hall. The Shirley Voirin Social Senior Center opened with a ribbon cutting August 5 and began a full slate of activities this week. Situated at the intersection of Morriss and Cross Timbers Road the 4,850 square foot facility features ample parking, an expansive kitchen suited for meal preparation or keeping food warm for a giant pot luck warm. There is a dance floor, arts and crafts areas, bookshelves and even a nook set aside for computer classes. The center is considered temporary because the Town has long term plans for an 18,000 square foot facility at a date and cost yet to be determined.

Repaired with insurance funds from tornado damage that happened a couple of years ago, the center occupies a building that has previously housed Town Hall, Flower Mound Police and the FMTV studios. Though it’s not the envisioned dream facility, the Voirin center is much more spacious and attractive than previously available space and will accommodate considerable expansion of senior activities. Its opening shows amazing progress in community facilities dedicated to seniors. Ideas of the Flower Mound senior center trace back to meetings and bingo games held in the kitchen of Mayor Jody Smith when she was mayor of Flower Mound in 2004. The Town of Flower Mound subsequently set up a facility use agreement for activities in the Flower Mound Community Church. The church facility provided impetus for expansion of the program but it was already too big for an approximately 1,100 square foot space at the Community Activity Center Golden Lounge when it opened in June of 2008. With daily recreational activities regularly attracting 70 to 80 seniors, a new spurt of growth is expected with opening of the Voirin center.
From the beginning, the seniors have always enjoyed having food together but adequacy of facilities was always a drawback, Ms. Voirin told The News Connection during a pre-grand opening tour of the facility. The new facility sports a six burner stove and a warming oven capable of handling up to 18 large trays. Seating area will now allow plenty of chairs and tables, not to mention space to comfortably navigate between them with a walker or wheelchair. The restaurant quality kitchen will be a great place for cooking classes. There is a large refrigerator and a spacious well-lighted pantry.
