Paleo, Crane Your Swan Neck, Land of Vandals, The Quota

For the last 5 years, living in a car, booking his own shows, producing all his own music, Paleo has become something of a mantlepiece in the American house show circuit. His tour history is a database for kindred spirits: over 700 shows across the US, about 150 a year since 2005. And while his self-released first record, Misery, Missouri (2005) earned him high marks from a number of sources, Paleo gathered most of his notoriety through his songwriting mecca, The Song Diary. Easter Day 2006 to Tax Day 2007, he wrote and recorded 365 songs consecutively. Other notable credits include soundtrack work alongside Okkervil River for the feature film In Search Of A Midnight Kiss (2007), winner of the John Cassavetes Award at the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards, and producing These United States' psychotropic debut record, A Picture of The Three Of Us At The Gate To The Garden Of Eden (2008), on which he played the majority of the instruments. The Crane Your Swan Neck project was by started by guitarist Randall Luecke in the early months of 08. The original songs were written on the piano while teaching himself said instrument. Preferring to write his own songs rather than learn scales or learn others' songs, he began to construct pop songs for the first time in his life. The fractured songwriting and intricate melodies are both products of his history in prog-rock as well as learning a new medium. David Strackany was raised in Elgin, Illinois. As a kid he crossed the busy street to a retirement home to chase stray angels down long linoleum halls, away from the souls they were hunting. He attended university, earned a Bachelors in Art and English, and did every drug under the sun along the way. With diploma in hand, the house in Elgin sold off, and a family strewn across the country, he started touring. For seven years he has lived from couch to couch wherever the shows carry him, playing almost 800 at last count. In a single year, he wrote and recorded 365 songs consecutively. Paste called it "a streetfight of freakish prolificacy," and Daytrotter's Sean Moeller playfully crowned him their "Poet Laureate.

&Quot;Black Swan" went into the 26th Film Independent Spirit Awards trailing both "Winter's Bone" and "The Kids Are All Right" in total nominations, but Darren Aronofsky's audacious ballet melodrama came out on top, winning the Best Feature award and also picking up honors for director Aronofsky, star Natalie Portman and cinematographer Matthew Libatique. The Fox Searchlight production, which was made for less than $15 million after its director's decade-long struggle to get it off the ground, is also nominated for Best Picture at Sunday's Academy Awards. In that category, at least, it is liable to further bolster the old Indie Spirits/Oscar adage, "Win on Saturday, lose on Sunday." Four of the five Best Feature nominees -- "Winter's Bone," "The Kids Are All Right," "127 Hours" and "Black Swan" -- are also nominated for Oscars in the Best Picture category. A fifth Oscar nominee, "The King's Speech," won the Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film category but was ineligible for any other awards.
