Kingsville's Cantu advances to final four at Olympic Boxing Trials

— Oscar Cantu is down to the final four.

The 20-year-old from Kingsville won a tiebreaker to advance in the challengers bracket of the 114-pound division at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Tuesday.

Cantu defeated John Franklin of Fort Carson, Colo., after the match was declared a tie and was decided by overall punches. The fight was deadlocked at 15 after three rounds, but Cantu was declared to have thrown the most punches by a 78-73 margin and was declared the winner.

"Before the fight, I had told my son that we're getting to the point where all the fighters are so good that the scores are going to be equal, so he needs to always be throwing punches and if we have to go to a tiebreaker, he'll be ahead," said Jaime Cantu, Oscar's father and coach. "When they announced that the fight was tied and was going to the tiebreaker, Oscar looked over and winked at me. He was confident, but I wasn't so sure. He told me later that he knew he had it, and I was pretty sure he had it, but you never know how the judges are going to call it."

It was an especially sweet win for Cantu, who suffered a loss to Franklin at the USA Boxing National Championships in June in Colorado Springs, Colo.

On Tuesday, Cantu trailed Franklin 5-3 after the first round, but he bounced back to drop Franklin with a straight right hand to the face in the second round and took an 11-10 lead heading into the final round. In the final round, Franklin was more elusive and neither side was able to score much.

Cantu advances to face Emilio Sanchez of Pacoima, Calif., in the challengers bracket Wednesday night.

"(Sanchez) is a standup fighter, very defensive, kind of like Winky Wright," Jaime Cantu said. "He's not elusive, not a runner and doesn't back up. He'll be there in front of Oscar, so he's just got to try to break through that defense."

The only other fighters still alive in the flyweight class are two-time Olympian Rau'Shea Warren and Shawn Simpson. Those fighters are both unbeaten and also will square off Wednesday night. The loser of that fight will battle the Cantu-Sanchez winner on Thursday night. The Warren-Simpson winner will advance to Friday's finals and await the survivor of the challengers bracket.

The winner of the bracket will represent Team USA at the 2012 Olympics in London. The runner-up will be the alternate.

Cantu started off the tournament by beating San Antonio's Adam Lopez 24-17 on Sunday.

Save the First Dance for Me: Battle Royale | Weddingbee

About Me: I’m an Iowan girl with a deep love of Harry Potter, classic movies, cardigans, and Post-Its. My type-A Virgo tendencies often cause me to drive my laid-back college sweetheart fiance batty with lists and PowerPoint presentations. I love to be crafty and do things myself, which explains why my two crazy kittens often will prance around the house covered in glitter and ribbons. When I am not bogged down with work, school, or wedding planning, I like to travel to visit my expansive family and have wild adventures with my best friends. After a rollercoaster ride of a love story, I’m ready to take that final plunge, marry the love of my life, and become a Mrs.!

I decided that making you all wait much longer would be very, very mean of me. I’m not a mean person, so I’m back to give you a rundown of our Dance Madness. Okay so I’m a little mean, because I’m only going to give you a run-down to the final round. Please don’t hate me too much?

Anyways, Mr. D was thrilled by this idea, he threw himself into his research. There would be times that I would call him and he would try to rush me off the phone because he was in the middle of a youtube-a-thon and could not be disturbed. He was determined to find a song that was perfect for us (and he also wanted to beat me at something for once). So after we had our seeds picked and bracket laid out, it was time to start the process.

ROUND ONE: As you can see by all of the pink, I won the majority of this round. Mr. D conceded that I am an excellent song picker. Though I must say that I was pretty impressed with his choices. Some of them were exactly what I pictured him picking, but some were not. One general theme with his though, was that they were all rock. I was feeling pretty smug that I was going to be the one to find “our” song after all. And then we moved on to round two.

ROUND TWO:

Three of his songs made it through, only one of mine did. And it wasn’t even my first seed. Mr. D is a smooth talker, I’m still not even sure how he talked his way into getting me to put aside my first seed for a fourth seed, but he did. In fact, I’m not even sure how he talked his way into three of his songs making it through. Hrmph. However, I will admit that the songs that made it through really represented us the best. I was going to be really disappointed however, if Mr. D got both of the final spots.
