Local swimmers fare well at meet

The East Suburban YMCA boys 200-meter freestyle relay quartet of 2011 Plum graduates Sean Ging and David Starr, 2011 Gateway graduate Martin Kendig and 2010 Gateway graduate Brad Myser placed fifth at last year's YMCA National Long Course Championships.

They hoped to improve that place finish at last week's national meet at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta.

The team members didn't get the better finish they were seeking, as they finished eighth. But they knocked a second off of last year's time and finished with a 1:39.03.

"They swam better than I thought they would," Haupt said.

"They were a little disappointed, but it was a much faster meet than last year. Nationals was in Maryland last year, and some strong teams from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina weren't there. It was a close race with a lot of strong teams. It pushed everyone."

Myser didn't continue swimming in college at Kent State University and hadn't trained since nationals last July.

He returned to training this summer, and Haupt was pleased with the way he performed.

"Considering the time off, he did very well. We weren't sure if he was conditioned enough, but he did very well."

Kendig, who graduated from Gateway in June, qualified and swam for the most events at nationals, as he took part in eight events — four relays and four individual swims.

The most events a swimmer could compete in was nine (five relays, four individuals).

Haupt said he was impressed with the girls 200 free relay, which included 13-year-old Victoria Metz, a rising eighth-grader at Oblock Elementary in Plum.

"She dropped four to five seconds and did a nice job earning the spot on the relay," Haupt said.

"You don't see that many 12- or 13-year- olds competing at nationals."

Metz teamed with Plum High School rising juniors Laurel Figurelli and Channing Nolan, as well as Valley student Staci Schrecongost on the relay, which swam to a time of 1:58.19.

They dropped more than a second and a half off their seed time.

The long course nationals meet ended the summer ESPY season, and, Haupt said, the group of nationals qualifiers represented ESPY well.

Also swimming at nationals were Plum students Luke Frederick and Scott Ro- manko, St. Joseph High School student Holly Stein and Kiski Area student Megan Paullet.

Almost all of the participants at nationals are rising seniors in high school or younger.
