Hudson head-on collision kills two and injuries one | Sarasota Car ...

Two families are reeling after the death of a 53-year-old man and the critical injuries of a 72-year-old. The two men were struck by a car that jumped the median and collided with them as they drove south on U.S. 19.

The car accident happened earlier this week when a 59-year-old man had been driving north early in the afternoon. Suddenly, his Suzuki Vitara moved onto the shoulder. The Florida Highway Patrol is unsure what caused the car to veer, but the driver overcorrected and crossed three lanes of traffic. The driver then crossed the median and was stopped after he hit the Honda Civic driven by the 72-year-old.

The 59-year-old's son claims that his father was in good health prior to the accident. The man was also familiar with cars and had previously worked as a mechanic. At the time of his death, he owned a power tool repair shop. The northbound driver did have a history of traffic violations, however. In a ten-year period, he had at least nine speeding tickets. He had also had his driver's license suspended for 30 days because he had 12 points against his license in a year. It is unclear if he had a valid license at the time of the accident.

The driver had previously been involved in a car crash and received a careless driving citation.

The 53-year-old passenger in the Honda was pronounced dead at the site of the accident. He was originally from Spring Hill, Florida. The 72-year-old driver was rushed to Bayfront Medical Center and remains in critical condition.

The Florida Highway Patrol plans to look into the crash, but investigations have been delayed because of inclement weather.
