Town of Waldo
Notes from the Hungry Heron Farm, August 12, 2011
The old Jetta has held us up off the ground for nearly 10 years with nary a whimper of protest. She’s rolled us half-way across the country and into Canada, her seats have put up with Beatrice’s shedding hair, her transmission has survived teenaged Ena learning to drive a stick shift. Her engine didn’t complain during the distracted times when we didn’t change the oil, but what she can’t survive is her aging chassis which is crumbling. It’s as if everything is dying at once: brakes, struts, transmission, radiator, and even the radio.
Yup, the old Jetta is headed for the bone yard, as Waldo resident Marshall Rolerson says. But what I want to know is why our 1998 vehicle looks like a rolling, rusted tin can when the ones in the used car lots, born the same year, look brand new. This is a question I ask myself as we scour the lots looking for another 1998 vehicle that we can afford to buy; a car unlike our own: you see, we want one that has been taken care of beautifully. Somehow it doesn’t seem fair.
Fact is, the Jetta was a town car and life on the Hungry Heron Farm has been difficult for her. Driving up and down the 1,000 feet of a driveway rutted in the spring (increasingly rutted year-round) has taken its toll. And nearly 200,000 miles should be good enough for any car.
If you have a lead on a cheap 4-wheel-drive vehicle, let us know. That’s what we really need.
Apologies to Mary Ellen Twombly, Class of 1960, for missing last week’s column! She writes:
“Anyone who attended Morse High School in Brooks should try to attend the reunion planned for Saturday, August 20 at Brooks Community Park on the banks of the Marsh Stream. We will meet anytime after 11:30 AM. Bring your own lunch and drinks and anything you'd like to share from more food and drinks to photos and stories of the good old days. We've had fun the last several times we've met and would like to institute a Morse High reunion every summer on the third Saturday in August at the park. Please get the word out to anyone you may think of. Hope to see you there.”
