Summer Fiction: The Fine Art of Basking
, A crime novel with an unusual twist: Authorship was shared by 26 different writers. Around the same time it was released, we were in the midst of planning our own Summer Fiction issue, so when the book came across our desk we decided to ask some of Canada’s literary luminaries to team up for a similar experiment, albeit on a much smaller scale — a short story. The only thing we provided was a sentence (“He’d/She’d always hated the summer”), which was promptly ignored, though it does in fact appear in a slightly altered form. The story began with Steven Heighton, who passed it on to the next writer, and so on, until all 11 writers had contributed a section. Cass sits at the large breakfast table in the courtyard among lush shrubs and small trees, which, the fatherly innkeeper tells him in fluent if florid English, were all splendidly in bloom last month. Among the foliage, in a bell-shaped cage, roosts an African grey with an ironic eye. The cage is far too large for its occupant, as if the bird has been shrinking for years. Tirelessly it mimics the sound of a man whistling a tune of seven notes, the final note always sour, like a droll, deliberate error. Now and then the innkeeper strolls out of the kitchen and praises the bird in gentle, tactful Spanish, or gives it some small treat, which mutes it momentarily.
A woman wrapped in a white towel appears on the sunlit gallery of the second floor, passing the numbered doors of the rooms as she walks from the direction of the showers. The doors are set close together, the rooms small. Drops of water glisten on her cropped black hair and pink shoulders. She has saronged the towel around her from just below the clavicle to mid-thigh. In a few seconds, feet silent, she has passed out of sight.
Without being asked, the innkeeper appears with a third café con leche ? or simply pretending to — begins to tell him about the Aztecs. “You must go to some of their ruins,” he says. “You must educate yourself. But today, I believe, the sun will be too hot. Naturally, tomorrow again the sun will be too hot. Perhaps it is just better to stay here with us and take cold beer.”

She’s always hated the summer at home. Too unreliable. Too prone to lingering grey soggy afternoons. Everyone goes on about the island’s glorious marvellous miraculous positively Californian micro-climate, so much drier and sunnier than the coastal mainland, so much milder and kinder than the rest of Canada, but she doesn’t buy it. It is only émigrés from Winnipeg and Edmonton who could believe and then endlessly repeat such a thing. It was part of the reason she’d set her sights on anthropology, so she could find a way to spend long periods of time away, south, far south. That, along with the fact that her particular specialization has nothing to do with classical music, nothing to do with pianos, and nothing to do with Stan Beggs.
