Happy Camper

The style repertoire has broadened in recent years from the unisex flats that first defined it, but "we don't follow trends that much, we have our own way of doing things", says chief executive Miguel Fluxa. "We still have classics that have sold for a long time, but you have to evolve or die."

Fluxa was born into the brand. Both came into being in 1975, creations of his father Lorenzo. The family's shoe-making heritage began in 1877 with Fluxa's great grandfather Antonio, who started Spain's first shoe factory on the island of Majorca. Lorenzo founded Camper (which translates as farmer) with a recycled shoe inspired by those worn by the island's peasant farmers. "The farmers did not have money so they took leather from the tannery wastage and old tyres and made their own shoes," Fluxa says. "They had a peculiar look but it was unisex and interesting."

Fluxa is sitting in the newly refurbished store in Sydney's historic Queen Victoria Building. The space is a nod to the brand's Australian past (this was the first Camper boutique to open in this country 10 years ago) and a peek into its future. The new look is part of the company's Together project, the name given to a collaborative retail and product design philosophy.

"This is in the DNA of the company. The first shop in 1981 was a collaboration with Fernando Amat, a well-known designer in Barcelona. We've done these types of shops since the beginning."

The curiosity of the Together concept is its deliberate disregard for retail convention that decrees brand uniformity. "Doing the shops differently was a decision we took at the end of the 90s and it works well," Fluxa says. "We take a concept to a maximum of five stores in different cities, so you end up with a portfolio of very

different designers, which is beautiful."

Tokujin Yoshioka, the Japanese designer responsible for the QVB makeover, has worked on stores in Paris and London. "He's very conceptual; more a furniture designer," Fluxa says, gesturing to the white moulded chairs in the store.

But the 7m by 5m feature wall, not the seats, is the piece de resistance. Resembling a vertical bed of roses, it's stitched with more than 15,000 swatches of red felt, drawing on themes used by the artist for a 2007 installation in New York.

A new Brisbane store, scheduled for early 2012, will be the work of a still undecided collaborator and the Together concept will roll out to the three other locations (Bondi Junction, Sydney; GPO and Chadstone, Melbourne) in due course.
