Brothers scoop top sheep prize at Cartmel Show
TWO young brothers who scooped one of the top prizes at one of Cumbria’s biggest events have described winning as the ‘best feeling you can get in farming’.
With show season well and truly underway, the 128th Cartmel Show brought thousands of people to the sun-baked Cartmel Park.
And Chris and Tom Ladd, 18 and 14 respectively, were overjoyed when their two-shear Texel tup was named best in show for the sheep section.
The victory came just days after the same sheep was named champion Texel at Penrith Show.
“This is even better because it is the first time we have been here,” said Chris, who works on the family farm, Benson Hall, in Kendal.
They won despite strong competition from an impressive entry, and Chris added: “It is brilliant knowing you are the best – you cannot get any better than this and it makes it all worthwhile.”
And, after a tense morning of judging, the winner of best in show in the cattle section was named as Infloence (CORRECT) Elope (CORRECT), a five-year-old Holstein heifer shown by David Wright, of Berry Holme Farm near Brigsteer.
Asked why he thought the cow won, the 26-year-old said: “It’s a well-balanced dairy animal – well put together.
“I am really pleased. You never know how you are going to do when you come along. It has been a great entry this year and that’s good to see. It’s good to support a local show.”
Elsewhere on the showground, visitors enjoyed watching horse and dog classes, children’s activities including a climbing wall, and a well-stocked food tent, where Stuart Higginson, of Higginson’s of Grange, celebrated winning in the sheep section’s best pair of mule shearlings class.
Meanwhile, over at the village industries tent, honorary secretary of 18 years Christine Knipe enjoyed being named best in show with her king-size patchwork quilt.
She said: “It’s the first time I have ever won that and I’m absolutely delighted. We have got a fantastic entry here with some absolutely stunning exhibits.”
The poultry and pigeons tent was another of the popular attractions, where Alan Procter won best in show.
Chairman Des Dalton said: “There are more entries this year than last year and it’s gone really well today. There are some good birds on show today.
“The tent has had a lot of interest from the public, with people coming in all day.”
