"I think it's definitely been a big benefit to me riding race horses," said the No. 9-ranked bull rider in the PRCA standings, who set the early standard Wednesday at the Missoula Stampede Rodeo with a score of 89. "When I was 13 or 14, I started riding bulls and race horses about the same time and I've always kind of done both.

"Racing horses kept me strong. Kept my balance good. I wish I had more time to do it now but I'm usually only home one or two days a week so it doesn't work out."

Atkinson, who hails from Lehi, Utah, decided to devote all his attention to bull riding about 18 months ago. Judging by his dazzling ride on Exotic Justin, it was the right decision to make.

"It's been my best year yet, and it's been exciting to be up where I might go to the National Finals for the first time," he said.

"I drew a good bull tonight. I was excited to have him. I've seen him a few times and I don't know if I could have hand-picked a better one in this pen. He fits me pretty well. I had a little trouble getting tapped off, but I just kind of stayed loose and it ended up working out for me.
