New Anti-Clot Drug Shows Promise for Heart Patients
A new blood thinner could help prevent strokes among people with an irregular heartbeat. Patients with atrial fibrillation —who commonly experience strokes due to blood clots—typically take warfarin, a drug that requires strict supervision, since food and other medications can interfere with it. But researchers say a newer drug called rivaroxaban is as effective as warfarin, without the need for such close monitoring. The findings, based on a trial of more than 14,000 patients who took either warfarin or rivaroxaban, appear today in the New England Journal of Medicine . Though the new drug was approved last month to prevent clots in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery, it hasn't yet been OK'd as an anti-stroke drug for people with atrial fibrillation (it's expected to be green-lighted in September). Rivaroxaban "will be game-changing for all of us that treat atrial fibrillation," Kousik Krishnan, an associate professor of medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, told HealthDay .

Cholesterol has a bad reputation in this country and is well-known for causing atherosclerosis through plaque formation in arteries. According to the American Heart Association , over 100 million American adults have high cholesterol values of 200 mg/dL and up. Although too much cholesterol is never good, there are different types of cholesterol and some of it is naturally produced in our body as well.
“Good” Cholesterol aka HDL (high-density lipoprotein) – A healthy level of HDL can prevent against heart attacks and strokes, while too low of an HDL level (40 mg/dL) may lead to an increase in risk of heart disease. Healthy HDL levels can be maintained by regular exercise and reducing trans fats.
“Bad” Cholesterol aka LDL (low-density lipoprotein) – LDL is the cholesterol that gives all cholesterols a bad reputation. Increased levels of LDL adhere to the lumen of blood vessels and can cause blockages in the arteries, leading to a heart attack or stroke. LDL is produced naturally by the body and can be genetically inherited as well. Healthy LDL levels can be maintained by reducing saturated fat and trans fat intake and it’s very common for doctors to prescribe medications to lower LDL blood cholesterol.
How Cholesterol Affects the Brain
Although lowering LDL cholesterol through medications like Lipitor and Trilipix are good for the heart, they may have negative impacts on the brain. These drugs contain Statin , which are HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, and are very commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs. The human brain contains about one fourth of the body’s total cholesterol and utilizes it to form neural connections that relate to memory and learning. Cholesterol helps form the myelin sheath around neurons, which allows for signals to jump between Schwann cells junctions.
Dr. Matthew Muldoon from the University of Pittsburgh researched deeper into the connection bewteen LDL lowering drugs and the human brain. He found several FDA complaints from cholesterol-lowering drug users claiming “memory loss, fuzzy thinking, and learning difficulties”. Dr. Muldoon began a couple of studies with patients who had high cholesterol levels and found that the groups taking the LDL lowering medications had common complaints of memory issues. In order to verify his theories, the patients who suffered from memory and learning impairment from LDL lowering drugs were given placebos and over 50% of them claimed that their memory and learning symptoms improved significantly when given the placebos rather than the LDL lower drugs. Despite Dr. Muldoon’s research, many scientists still believe that the link between these LDL lowering medications and memory/learning impairment are very rare and suggest that the cognitive side effects can be cause by numerous other factors such as age, sugar levels, and genetics.
