Yellow Wings touch down in Dunnville

Local aviation buffs got a rare treat at the Dunnville Airport on Thursday, Aug. 11, when four Second World War aircraft touched down as part of a cross-Canada trek highlighting the history of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP).

The vintage planes—a Harvard, a Cornell, a Fleet Finch and a Stearman—are making their way east as part of Vintage Wings of Canada's Yellow Wings project.

The aircraft were among those used to train tens of thousands of pilots for service in the Second World War through the BCATP, a sweeping military and industrial initiative that saw the creation of hundreds of training facilities, including Dunnville's No. 6 Service Flying Training School.

Thursday's stop in Dunnville turned out to be an even more impressive show of vintage flyers than expected. Like moths to a flame—or in this case, Tiger Moths—other Second World War aircraft from southern Ontario descended on Dunnville for the Yellow Wings project's local stop.

"We seemed to have picked up a few people along the way," Yellow Wings pilot Dave Hadfield said while surveying more than a dozen Second World War trainers on display at the airport Thursday afternoon.

"We spread the word that we were doing this and everybody else thought it was a good idea. Gentlemen like Tom Dietrich, who has a number of these yellow airplanes in Guelph, have decided to join us on this segment of our tour and make it that much more of a memorable occasion.

"I don't think we've had this number of Fleet Aircraft in one place maybe even since the Second World War. These Finches are quite rare, and to see four of them side by side like this is really something."

Hadfield is among a group of over 20 volunteer pilots with Vintage Wings of Canada who are flying the Yellow Wings on their cross-Canada journey.

"The Cornell and Harvard started off from Langley, B.C. in early June. They attended the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association annual convention, then they came back across the Rockies and joined up with our Finch and our Stearman, and they've been visiting all the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan Second World War training airfields along the way," he said.

The Yellow Wings fleet touched down in St. Catharines and Welland before the planes' arrival at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. They were on display at the airport throughout the afternoon, stored in the airport's hangar overnight, and took off for Hamilton Friday morning.
